Washington, D.C. - After a terrific three-game run to start the season, the Brown volleyball team (3-1) met their match Saturday night, losing to Georgetown (6-3) 3-0 in the final of the Georgetown Classic. Sophomore Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, OH) led the Bears in the losing effort, recording a double-double with ten kills and ten assists.
The opening set was an extremely competitive one, as Brown took an early 5-2 lead only to see the Hoyas come back strong to tie the game at eight. The two teams then traded points until they found themselves deadlocked at 13, when Georgetown was finally able to gain some separation, going on an 8-3 run. The Bears were unable to recover from the setback, ultimately dropping the first game by a score of 25-23.
Entering the second game the action remained close, but the Hoyas were able to stay just ahead of the Bears throughout the game, and went on to win 25-22. Brown struggled to find their rhythm in the final set, falling behind early 15-9. Though they managed to get within 22-17, Bruno was unable to complete the comeback, and dropped the final game 25-19. The loss completed an otherwise almost perfect tournament for Brown, as the team went 3-0 in its first three matches, losing only one game in that span.
Senior captain Natalie Meyers (Seal Beach, CA) also had a strong match, recording 27 assists and a team-high .667 hitting percentage to go with seven digs. Freshman Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) led the team in digs for the second consecutive match with 17 digs, and also chipped in two assists.
The Bears will be in action again on Tuesday night, as they will take on intra-city rival Providence College at 7 p.m.
