NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Shirin Tooloee tallied eight kills and seven digs, but Brown University volleyball fell at Columbia University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-22), on Friday night at Levien Gymnasium.
In their penultimate match of the season, the Bears (7-17, 2-11 Ivy) nearly forced a fourth frame, but the Lions (10-12, 5-8 Ivy) took the victory in straight sets.
Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) posted her team high in kills on a .350 hitting percentage. Junior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and freshman Gabrielle Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) each notched six kills.
Freshman Joanne Won (Newport Beach, Calif.) registered 12 digs – all in the third set. Senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) contributed nine digs. At the setter spot, freshmen Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) and Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) dished out 14 and 13 assists respectively.
Brown remained within 10-8 of Columbia in set one before the Lions pulled ahead 17-10 on a 7-2 run on their way to a 25-15 set win. Tooloee and Merten each charted four digs in the set.
In set two, the Bears trailed 15-8 but cut the margin to 20-17 prior to the hosts claiming a 25-19 set win. Tooloee and Stillwell notched four kills apiece in the stanza.
Columbia jumped out to an 8-0 edge in set three, but Brown worked its way back into the set, trimming its deficit to 17-15. The Bears remained within 24-22 late in the period, but the Lions took a 25-22 set win. Won compiled all 12 of her digs in the stanza.
For Columbia, Anja Malesevic terminated on a match-high 22 kills, Audrey Cheng distributed a match-best 30 assists, and Kalie Wood led the match with 14 digs.
Brown and Columbia split the season series as the Bears beat the Lions 3-1 on October 7 in Providence, R.I.
Next, Brown concludes its season at Cornell tomorrow, Saturday, November 11, at 5:00 p.m.
