Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at Crosstown Rival Providence College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior libero Melissa Cairo tallied a match-high 18 digs, but Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) decision at crosstown rival Providence College on Tuesday night inside Alumni Hall.

The Bears (4-3) challenged the hosts in all three sets and nearly tied the match at one set apiece with a late charge in the second stanza, but the Friars (11-0) held on in each frame to sweep the match and remain undefeated on the season.

Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) registered her sixth match this season with double-figure digs while junior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Bears with eight kills on .300 hitting. Stillwell has hit .300 or better in each of her last four matches.

At the setter spot, junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) and freshman Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) combined for 22 assists, recording 12 and 10 helpers respectively. Junior Courtney Palm (St. Louis, Mo.) tacked on five kills on .455 hitting.

In set one, the two teams stood tied at 12-12 with neither team holding a lead larger than two points before Providence used a 7-1 run to pull ahead 19-13. Brown countered with a 4-1 burst to pull within 20-17 prior to the Friars closing out the 25-19 set win. Stillwell and Cairo compiled four kills and five digs respectively in the frame.

The Bears opened set two with an 8-3 lead and remained ahead at 13-10, but the hosts went on a 10-2 run to gain a 20-15 edge. Brown cut the margin to 22-21 before the Friars scored the last three points to take the set, 25-21. Cairo came up with another five digs in the stanza.

With the two teams knotted at 7-7 in set three, Providence notched a 12-2 run to claim a 19-9 advantage. The Bears rallied with a 6-1 spurt to make it 23-19 before PC pulled out a 25-19 set victory. Cairo posted eight digs in the period.

For Providence, Addison Root charted 18 kills on .500 hitting while Allison Barber handed out a match-high 39 assists and completed the double-double with 10 digs. Jenae Alderson added 10 kills and four blocks.

Next, Brown plays at the SHU Invitational, taking on Hartford (Friday, 4:00 p.m.), host Sacred Heart (Saturday, 12:30 p.m.), and Lehigh (Saturday, 4:00 p.m.).
