SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Sabrina Stillwell recorded a .478 hitting percentage on the day as Brown University volleyball defeated Manhattan College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23), and fell to Bryant University, 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13, 15-12), on Saturday at the Chace Athletic Center.
At Bryant's Hampton Inn-vitational, the Bears (4-2) topped the Jaspers (0-9) for the second time this season before dropping a decision to the host Bulldogs (5-6), who rallied to take the five-set match.
An All-Tournament Team selection, Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) finished with 24 kills on the day and committed just two errors on 46 attempts. She hit .727 against Manhattan – the fourth highest hitting percentage in a single match in Brown history – and hit .485 over the three-match tournament.
Senior Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched 30 digs between the two games and passed the 1,000-dig mark for her career over the weekend.
Next, Brown plays in the Sacred Heart University Invitational, taking on Hartford (Sept. 15, 4:00 p.m.), the host Pioneers (Sept. 16, 12:30 p.m.), and Lehigh (Sept. 16, 4:00 p.m.).
Match 1: Brown 3, Manhattan 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23)
Freshman Camberly Moriconi tallied 11 kills, and the Bears hit .363 as a team as Brown topped Manhattan, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23), in its first match of the day at the Hampton Inn-vitational on Saturday morning.
Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) posted her 11 kills on .429 hitting while junior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) landed seven kills on 11 attempts with no errors for a hitting percentage of .727 – the fourth highest hitting percentage in a single match in Brown history. Sophomore Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) tacked on eight kills on .667 hitting.
Freshman Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) and junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) combined for 30 assists, posting 18 and 12 respectively. Freshman Joanne Won (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) chipped in seven and six digs apiece.
Trailing 12-11 in set one, Brown went on a 6-2 spurt to pull ahead 17-14. The Bears outscored the Jaspers 8-3 down the stretch to take a 25-18 victory in the opening frame. In the stanza, Stillwell and Moriconi each terminated on four kills with Stillwell hitting .800 in the set.
In set two, Brown jumped out to an 11-5 edge and did not allow Manhattan to trim the margin below four points the rest of the way. The Bears concluded the 25-15 set win behind a 5-1 run. Jacobs landed four kills on four attempts in the period.
Brown staked itself to a 15-7 lead midway through the third stanza and remained ahead 22-17 late in the frame. Manhattan used a 5-1 burst to cut its deficit to 23-22, but the Bears won two of the next three points to claim the set, 25-23. Moriconi dropped five kills on seven swings in the last stanza.
For Manhattan, Zoe Lindsey distributed a match-high 22 assists, Sandra Lozanova had a match-best 13 digs, and Erin Hoener tallied eight kills.
The Bears topped Manhattan for the second time this season after sweeping the Jaspers, 3-0, on Sept. 1.
Match 2: Bryant 3, Brown 2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13, 15-12)
Junior Sabrina Stillwell recorded 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, but Brown fell to Bryant, 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13, 15-12), in its second match of the day on Saturday evening.
The Bears gained a 2-0 set lead before the host Bulldogs came back to win the match in five sets.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied her season-high 16 kills on 35 attempts with just two errors and finished the tournament with a .485 hitting percentage. Freshman Gabrielle Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) matched Stillwell with 16 kills of her own.
Junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) totaled her first double-double of the season on 20 assists and 11 digs while senior Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) contributed a season-high 24 digs – her second 20-dig performance of the year.
Neither side held a lead larger than three points in set one until Bryant pulled ahead 17-13. Brown responded with a 10-3 streak to grab a 23-20 edge before closing out the 25-21 set win. Moriconi terminated on five kills in the frame.
Brown extended its margin to a 2-0 set lead with a 25-23 win in set two. The Bears faced a 22-19 deficit late in the set but rallied to win six of the period's last seven points to gain the win. Stillwell paced the Bears with four kills.
In set three, Bryant captured a 14-8 lead before extending the margin to 18-9. Brown trimmed the edge to 20-15, but the hosts finished the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-17, staving off elimination.
The Bulldogs tied the match at two sets apiece with a 25-13 win in set four. Brown remained within 13-9 early in the period prior to Bryant outscoring the visitors 12-4 over the remainder of the stanza. Cairo came up with nine digs in the frame.
In the decisive fifth set, Bryant took an 8-4 lead at the switch. The Bears scored three straight points to rally within 14-12 before the hosts notched the final point. In the frame, Stillwell landed four kills on .400 hitting.
For Bryant, Alexandra Lunsford tallied 14 kills, Kirstyn Sperry distributed a match-high 32 assists, and Erika Ward made 23 digs.
