Volleyball Returns Home to Face Columbia, Cornell

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University volleyball returns to the Pizzitola Sports Center for the first time since Sept. 30 when the Bears host Columbia University on Friday at 7 p.m. and Cornell University on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the team's first home Ivy League twin bill of the season.

Senior Maddie Lord set a Brown single-match record with 34 kills, leading a comeback surge, but the Bears fell to Penn, 3-2 (26-24, 25-22, 24-26, 16-25, 15-11), at The Palestra.

Brown trailed two sets to none and faced match point in set three but rallied to take the third and fourth frames from the Quakers before the hosts prevailed in the deciding set.

Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) chalked up her record-setting performance behind eight kills in the first set, nine in the second, six apiece in the third and fourth games, and five in the final set. Kathy Hannon and Courtney Chase previously held the school's high mark with 30 kills each. Lord hit .364 in the match and added 12 digs and three aces.


Columbia enters the weekend with a 7-7 overall record and a 3-2 mark in Ivy League play. Last weekend the Lions split with Dartmouth (3-1 win) and Harvard (3-2 loss).

Katarina Jovicic leads the Ivy League with 1.13 blocks per set and stands third in the conference with a .363 hitting percentage. Bailey Springer ranks third in the Ancient Eight in kills per set (3.38) while Jennifer Petrovich is third in the league in assists per set (9.66).


Cornell brings a 3-12 overall mark into the weekend and stands at 0-5 in Ivy League competition. The Big Red last won in a 3-1 victory over Albany on Sept. 21.

Natasha Rowland paces the Ivy League with 5.43 digs per set and ranks second in the league with 288 total digs. Alyssa Phelps stands fourth in the conference in assists per set (8.83), and Macey Wilson is fifth in the Ancient Eight in blocks per set (0.94).


Brown took both matches from Cornell a season ago and split last year's two meetings with Columbia.

The Bears won 3-1 at Cornell on Oct. 19 and followed that with a 3-2 home victory over the Big Red on Nov. 8. Against Columbia, Brown swept the Lions at home on Nov. 9 and fell 3-0 in New York on Oct. 18.


Maddie Lord not only set a Brown single-match record with 34 kills against Penn but she also continued to increase her career totals in service aces and kills.

Lord, who received Brown Athlete of the Week honors this past week, remained in fifth on Brown's career service aces list with 88 aces. She pushed her career kills total to 982 kills after landing 49 kills over the weekend.

Senior Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) continues to stand in fifth place on Brown's career digs ledger with 1,248 digs.


Sophomore Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) ranks second in the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.377) while Kathryn Conner sits first in total digs (310) and second in digs per set (5.17).

Maddie Lord stands among the top five in the conference in service aces per set (second, 0.39), total kills (second, 206), and kills per set (fourth, 3.32)


Brown hits the road at Yale on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. prior to hosting Harvard (Oct. 31, 7 p.m.) and Dartmouth (Nov. 1, 5 p.m.) the following weekend.
