Volleyball Announces Class of 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball Head Coach Diane Short has announced the four incoming members of the Class of 2018 who will join the Bears roster this coming fall: Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School), Chaney Hart (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), Casey Tierney (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty).

"They'll certainly challenge for spots," Short said. "We do have some openings on the right side because we did graduate two, so the competition for that is wide open. Defensively, I thought that was an area we needed to improve on: control, serve-receive. When we lost last year I thought it had to do with our serve-receive. In this class, we've got three players who can pass the ball."

The incoming class shares an uncanny chemistry with the three California natives playing together for the Red Rock club team. Tierney, who moved to the Golden State in high school, used to live in Arizona where she knew Hart, completing the group's connection as they reunite on College Hill.

"They'll have a comfort and a team chemistry which you don't always get at the beginning of the season," Short said. "I expect that chemistry to be pretty good."

  Melissa Cairo
Hometown:
Hillsborough, Calif.
High School:
Menlo School
Club Team:
Vision, Red Rock
Height:
5-9
Position: Libero

- Silver and Bronze medalist and Junior Nationals with Vision club team
- Northern California, Section and League Champion
- First Team San Mateo County and First Team All-League as a senior
- Three-year team captain

Why Brown?
"I chose Brown because it not only allows but supports its students' ability to be the architect of their education. It supports independent and creative education, and doesn't force its students into a very narrowed and specified major, but rather has them concentrate in an area while allowing them to continue exploring other areas that might also be of interest through the pass-fail system."

Coach Short on Cairo
"She's a very high level libero. She's played on some top-level teams. She's very tall at the position for us. She covers a lot of area and reads well with good energy. Her serve-receive is very consistent."

Chaney Hart
Hometown:
Paradise Valley, Ariz.
High School:
Xavier College Prep
Club Team:
Spiral
Height:
5-8
Position:
Libero/Defensive Specialist

- Arizona Coaches Association/Dairy Council of Arizona First Team All-American
- Arizona 5A All-State Division I Second Team
- Led team to Arizona 5A Division I State Championship as a senior
- Led Xavier College Prep to first DI sand volleyball high school state championship in nation in 2012
- First player from Arizona in Brown volleyball history

Why Brown?
"Attending Brown is a dream for me because it allows me to attend an incredible school with strong academics, a remarkable art program and play college volleyball which has been my goal since I was 12. To have the opportunity to be here and play volleyball, I am living my dream."

Coach Short on Hart
"She came to camp last year and impressed us. She's someone who has so much energy. That's something that I was really impressed with at camp, getting to see her for a few days. She had such positive energy that you can't teach."

Casey Tierney
Hometown:
San Jose, Calif.
High School:
Archbishop Mitty
Club Team:
Red Rock
Height:
6-0
Position:
Outside Hitter/Right Side

- Led Archbishop Mitty to back-to-back California State Championships (2012-2013)
- Received 2013 Sportsmanship Award for "Pursuing Victory with Honor"
- Hit .372 as a junior and .272 as a senior

Why Brown?
"I chose Brown because it encompasses everything that I want in a school. It is a top academic school that has a great program for engineering. The fact that I get to play Division I volleyball along with pursuing my major makes Brown the perfect fit for me."

Coach Short on Tierney
"She's what I call a 'banger'. She hits the ball hard, just terminates the ball."

Shirin Tooloee
Hometown:
San Jose, Calif.
High School:
Archbishop Mitty
Club Team:
Red Rock
Height:
5-11
Position:
Outside Hitter

- Two-time WCAL Honorable Mention (2012-2013)
- Led Archbishop Mitty to back-to-back California State Championships (2012-2013)
- Won 15 Open Bronze Medal

Why Brown?

"For me, Brown is the perfect combination of everything I want in a school. Its top tier academics, specifically in its engineering program, and its flexible curriculum are huge reasons I chose to go to Brown. The fact that I get to play D-I volleyball while pursuing a degree at such a prestigious school makes it obvious that Brown is the perfect school for me."

Coach Short on Tooloee
"She's an outside hitter who can play six rotations, which is something we need. Because we're playing a 6-2, you need to have an outside hitter playing all around and she has the ability to do that."
