PRINCETON, N.J. – Brown volleyball senior Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) landed on the All-Ivy League First Team and junior Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) played her way onto the Second Team, it was announced when the League office unveiled the annual volleyball award winners on Thursday.

Volleyball Blanked at Princeton to Close Season
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bears saw their four-match win streak severed by Princeton in a 3-0 setback (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) in the Brown volleyball team’s Ivy League regular season finale at Dillon Gym on Saturday. With Harvard’s win over Cornell, Brown finishes tied for third place in the Ivy League standings with Penn for the team’s highest finish since 2005. The Bears conclude the 2013 campaign with a 12-13 overall record and 8-6 showing in league play, which marks the squad’s most overall wins since 2008 and most Ivy victories since 2005.

Lord Lifts Volleyball to Second Place with 3-2 Win over Penn
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) notched a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 13 digs to boost the Brown volleyball team to a 3-2 win (23-25, 17-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-13) over Penn and sling the Bears into a three-way tie for second place in the Ivy League standings with Harvard and the Quakers.

Seniors Power Volleyball to 3-0 Shutout of Columbia in Home Finale
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The senior class combined for 27 kills and fittingly powered the Brown volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) over Columbia in Ivy League action on Senior Night at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday. The Bears stand at 11-12 overall and 7-5 in league play, leaving the team one victory away from its first 12-win season since 2008 and in position to post its first winning Ivy League record since 2005.

Volleyball Set to Wrap Up Home Slate against Cornell, Columbia
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cornell (7-13, 3-7 Ivy) and Columbia (5-14, 3-7 Ivy) are due to arrive at the Pizzitola Sports Center for Brown volleyball’s last Ivy League regular season home series which puts the Bears in position to fight for their best overall win total since 2008. With a record of 9-12 overall and 5-5 in Ancient Eight play, Brown has already matched its best win total in three seasons, and victories over the Big Red on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Lions on Saturday at 5 p.m. would leave Brown just one win shy of the 12-win mark the squad posted over five years ago.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) swatted 18 kills, nine of which came in the last two sets, to help the Brown volleyball team endure a 3-2 decision (25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13) over Cornell in Ivy League action at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday evening. The Bears improve to 10-12 overall and 6-5 in Ivy League play to exceed five league wins for the first time since 2005. The Big Red falls to 7-14 overall and 3-8 in the Ancient Eight, while victories for Harvard and Penn keep the Bears locked into fourth place in the Ivy standings.

Conner Named to Volleyball Capital One Academic All-District Team
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball junior Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) was named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District® Volleyball First Team as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America, it was announced on Thursday. Conner, an economics concentrator with a 3.85 grade point average, becomes the first Bears volleyball player to collect All-District® honors since Brianna Williamson ’11 and moves on to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot.

The Bears improve to 9-12 overall and 5-5 in league action while the Big Green drops to 10-12 on the season and 3-7 in the Ivy League.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A powerful Harvard offense hit .285 to deliver a 3-1 loss (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-12) to the Brown volleyball team in Ivy League action at the Malkin Athletic Center on Friday evening. Brown suffers its second straight defeat and moves to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in Ancient Eight play, while the Crimson even the season series to improve to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in the Ivy League.

The victory snaps a two-match losing streak and helps the Bears improve to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play, which is the most overall wins for Brown since 2010 and most Ivy League wins since 2008. The Big Red falls 6-11 overall and 2-5 in league action with the loss.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the first time in nearly seven years, the Brown volleyball team defeated Princeton, 3-2, after a fierce five set battle in Ivy League action at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday. Junior Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) crushed 18 kills to help the Bears win its third-straight five set decision and snap a 12-match losing streak against the Tigers, dating back to Brown’s last win over their league foe on Oct. 20, 2006. Brown improves to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in Ivy League play, matching the team’s win totals from last season in both categories with 10 matches left to play.

Derrough once again shared the nod as the league’s top performer with Yale sophomore Jesse Ebner. Senior Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) joined Derrough by landing on the Weekly Honor Roll with a team-best 2.93 kills per set.

DURHAM, N.H. – The Brown volleyball team could not slow a rallying University of New Hampshire squad that captured three straight sets to turn a 2-0 Bears lead into a 3-2 victory for the Wildcats in the Brown’s opening match of the Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gymnasium on Friday. The Bears took the first two sets by scores of 25-19, but UNH would not be bested in its own gym as the hosts won the next three sets 25-22, 25-19 and 15-8. Brown drops to 0-1 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 3-2 overall.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A trio of games in two days at the eighth-annual Holly Young Invitational marks the beginning of the 2013 Brown volleyball season when the team travels to the University of New Hampshire on Friday to take on the Wildcats in the 2013 season opener at 7 p.m. The Bears, who finished 7-17 overall in 2012, battle with Missouri State at 10 a.m. and St. John’s at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday to round out the event.

Volleyball’s Incoming Class Receives National Ranking
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University’s 2013 recruiting class received a High Honorable Mention honor in the annual recruiting list recently released by PrepVolleyball.com. The six-member class received a top-60 ranking in a field of over 330 Division I volleyball programs and was placed in the same Honorable Mention group as perennial powers Notre Dame, Alabama and Connecticut.

Brown Volleyball Announces Class of 2017
Brown head volleyball coach Diane Short has announced the six members of the Class of 2017 who will be joining the Bears on the court in the fall of 2013. The group includes two setters, two middle blockers and two outside hitters, and the student-athletes all hail from the state of California.
