Brown Topped at Ivy-Leading Yale

New Haven, Conn. – Taking on the reigning Ivy League champions, who are undefeated in conference play this year, Brown volleyball fell to Yale in straight sets (21-25, 21-25, 22-25). The Bears were able to math up defensively with the Bulldogs as they equaled the Bulldogs in blocks and managed to out-dig the Eli's 64-62, with sophomore libero Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) posting a match-high 17 digs. But in the end Yale kept hitting to push past Brown.

The Bears (5-13, 1-7) stayed with champs all match long, falling in close sets in each game. Yale (12-5, 8-0) totaled 41 kills and a .178 team hitting percentage to top Bruno.

Brown's offense was keyed by sophomore Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.,) who had a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore Maryl Vanden Bos (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) came off the bench for the Bears and played a key role setting up Bruno's attacks, tallying a Brown-leading 14 assists.

In the first set of the match, Brown showed Yale they were not in for an easy night as they battled back from a five-point deficit at 17-12 to tie the game at 19-all, before the Bulldogs closed out the game.

Brown did it again in the second, this time facing a nine-point hole at 20-11. The Bears stormed back as back-to-back kills from junior Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar) brought the score to 23-21. The Bulldogs got back-to-backs of their own however to take a 2-0 lead.

Bruno continued to attack in the third, jumping out to a 10-7 lead and holding the advantage late into the set at 17-16. Yale rallied late taking the lead at 18-17 before an eventual match point at 24-22.

The Bears are back in action next weekend with a home series against Cornell and Columbia.
