PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown volleyball got back on the winning track on Wednesday night, returning to the Pizzitola Sports center where they defeated in-state rival Rhode Island, 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 25-17). Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) led the way for the Bears with a match-high 15 kills.
Lord was aided in the match as both of Brown's setters turned in double-double performances. Junior Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied 22 assists and 10 digs while rookie Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) posted 17 assists and 15 digs.
The first three sets of the match were close, back-and-forth affairs with Brown (4-9) coming out on top in two games. The initial set went to match point first for URI (6-11) at 24-23, but Killian served Brown to three-straight points and a game one victory.
URI was able to take the second set and stay close for much of the third thanks large in part to hitters Britta Baarstad and Catie Steffen who each tallied 11 kills.
Brown turned on the jets in the fourth, jumping out to a 13-5 lead before closing out the Rams for the win. Bruno is now 2-1 at home in 2012.
Libero Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted a match-high 21 digs and was joined by freshman Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) and senior Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.) as players with 10-plus digs.
Brown returns to action this weekend with an Ivy League road double-header. The Bears travel to take on Harvard on Friday at 7 p.m., before facing Dartmouth on Saturday at 5 p.m.
