Fullerton, Calif. – In its second game of the Cal State Fullerton Invitational, Brown ran into a hot-hitting Santa Clara team and was topped, 3-0 (17-25, 14-25, 21-25). In their final contest of their West Coast road trip, the Bears ran into big San Diego State squad that controlled the net for much of the match in an eventual 3-0 (11-25, 14-25, 12-25).
In Saturday's first game the Broncos hit .405 as a team and totaled 45 kills to the Bears .244 percentage and 32 kills. Sophomore Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) was once again the focal point of the offences for Bruno, tallying a team-high 11 kills on 22 attacks.
Santa Clara (9-4) was strong at the net, totaling 10 blocks and also places the ball well on serves with 10 service aces. Taylor Milton posted a match-high 13 kills.
Junior setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) was active all around the court for Brown (3-6), with 18 assists, seven digs, a service ace and a block.
The Bears were able to regroup after to impressive sets Santa Clara, battling the Broncos to 21-all in the third set. SCU was able to put together four-straight points however on three kills and a service ace to close out the win.
San Diego State (10-2) also hit well against the Bears, posting a .360 mark with 42 kills, but the difference came on the defensive side at the net, where the Aztecs totaled 23 blocks, keeping Brown from getting into any offensive groove.
SDSU only had one player tally more than eight kills but five had six or more. Brown was led by offensively by junior outside hitter Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.), with five kills.
Brown returns to the court on Saturday, September 22, in its first Ivy League contest versus Yale a the Pizzitola Sports Center at 2 p.m.
