New Britain, Conn. – Brown Volleyball improved to 2-1 on the young season, defeating host Central Connecticut, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14), in the final game of the CCSU Invitational. The Bears also took on St. John's, but fell 3-0 (18-25, 16-25, 22-25). Junior setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and sophomore libero Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Brown put together an all-around team effort against the Blue Devils (3-4) as seven different players had at least three kills in addition to the superb defense from Conner and 19 assists from Rieckhoff.
The Bears did not allow CCSU to reach 20 points in each of the three sets, capping Central Connecticut at 14 in the final game. Bruno tallied 14 blocks in the match with five from Rieckhoff and four from sophomore Taylor Bantle (Pacific Palisades, Calif.).
Both Bantle and classmate Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) led the way offensively with eight kills each.
The Bears ran into a team firing on all offensive cylinders against St. John's (6-1) as three Red Storm players finished with double-digit kills while STJ hit .352 as a team.
Rookie Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) came off the bench to lead Brown with seven kills on 15 attacks while also adding a team-high eight digs.
Brown played a tough third set as the teams battled to a 21-all tie, but St. John's got hot late to secure the 25-22 win.
The Bears return to the court next weekend at the Yale Invitational. Bruno won't face the Eli's but will take on Northwestern and Villanova.
