New Britain, Conn. – Junior Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the way for the Brown Volleyball team on Friday night as the Bears opened the 2012 season at the Central Connecticut State Invitational against Holy Cross. Pastore racked up a match-high 18 kills to lead three Bears in double-digit kills as Brown defeated the Crusaders 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14).
Pastore's impressive kill tally was accompanied by five digs and a block as she was joined by classmate Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) and sophomore Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) in double-digits kills, as each player tallied 13 spikes. Megan Lynch paced Holy Cross with 15 kills.
Brown took an early 10-6 lead in the first set of the match and kept its advantage until 13-9. Holy Cross stayed within two points until 21-19, but the Bears closed out the first set on a 4-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Lord to take its first game of the season.
Bruno led from wire-to-wire in set two, leading by as much as five points at 18-13 before eventually bringing the Crusaders to the brink, two games to none, taking set number two, 25-22.
Holy Cross was able to tale the third set, but the Bears rebounded in the fourth in a big way, jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the game. Lord registered three of Brown's final four points to close out the match to solidify the win for Bruno.
Sophomore Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) set a match-high with 25 digs, while Lord registered a double-double with 14 digs to go along with her 13 kills. Junior setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) also had a match-high with 35 assists.
Brown is back in action with two games on Saturday, facing St. John's at 11 a.m., before taking on host, CCSU at 5:30 p.m.
