PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Head coach Diane Short and the Brown volleyball team return to game action on the court this weekend at the Central Connecticut State Invitational to open the 2012 season. It is one of two tournaments the Bears will compete in this year in addition to its Ivy League schedule and in-state rivalry games against Providence College and Rhode Island.
Senior captain Kathryn Glickman (San Francisco, Calif.) leads Brown this season as the squad's leader in blocks last season with 75 in just 25 matches last year. The Bears also return their top eight players in kills from 2011 including sophomore Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.), who was fourth in the Ivy League last season with 302 kills, while also ranking fourth with 0.30 service aces per set.
Senior Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.), juniors Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.), Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) and Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.), and sophomores Brittany Link (Hinckley, Ohio) and Taylor Bantle (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) return along the front line for Brown, providing a formidable rotation for the Bears.
Brown must replace All-Ivy libero Annika Gliottone '11, and will look to several players to fill the void. Junior Alexandra Rieckhoff (Pasadena, Calif.) was second on the team in digs last season, while serving as the squad's setter. Rieckhoff was sixth in the league last season with 7.91 assists per set. Second-year libero Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, Calif.) was third on the team with 194 digs. Senior Alexandra Ilstad (Alamo, Calif.) will also see time.
The Bears also welcome a deep class of rookies this season. Defensive specialist Jocelyn Caster (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), libero Carolyn Curran (University Heights, Ohio), setter Taylor Fearing (Marlborough, Mass.), outside hitter Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.), setter Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and opposite McKenna Webster (Solana Beach, Calif.) will look to make an impact this year.
In addition to the team's opening tournament at CCSU, the Bears will make a cross-country trip to Fullerton, Calif., to take part in the Cal-State Fullerton Tournament on September 14-15.
Brown's first home game comes on September 12 against PC and begins its Ivy League slate on September 28, on the road at Columbia.
