South Kingston, R.I. – Do-it-all freshman Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) had a match-high 17 kills while chipping in a double-double with 11 digs to go along with two service aces and a block, but it was not enough as Brown fell 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 21-25) to in-state rival URI at Keeney Gymnasium.
URI (7-6) jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first set of the match but Brown battled back to tie it at 16-all. It was the Rams who would garner control however, closing out the frame on a 9-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bears (4-7) rebounded in set number two, overcoming a 10-4 deficit at the start of the frame. Bruno roared back at that point to take a 15-11 advantage and held the lead from there on out, tying up the game at one-all.
The third and fourth frames were both tightly contested as the teams battled to 19-all and 18-all late ties, respectively. It was URI that would seal it late though, as Kayla Wilson and then Britta Baarstad closed out the sets with kills to give the Rams 25-22 and 25-21 wins.
Wilson finished the game with a 13-kill, 10 dig double-double, while Baarstad had a team-high 16 kills.
Sophomore setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) doubled up her counterpart with 44 assists, while junior co-captain and libero Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) had a match-high 21 digs. Sophomore Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) was second on the team with 11 kills, while hitting .450 for the match.
Brown opens its Ivy League slate this Saturday when the team travels to take on Yale at 7 p.m.
