Lord’s 23 Kills Not Enough as Brown Falls in Five to Maryland-Eastern Shore

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – Freshman outside hitter Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) registered 23 kills versus Maryland-Eastern Shore and the Bears took the first two sets against the Hawks, but UMES was able to take the final three sets to win 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 11-15) in the fourth match of the 2011 Brown Invitational.

Brown (3-6) was sparked in the first set by the return of junior co-captain Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.), who was making her first start of the year. The Bears jumped out to an early 9-3 lead and had a nearly perfect frame, registering their first 17 points without an attack error. Lord paced the offense with six kills while hitting .625 in the set.

The second was much closer that the first as both teams battled to a 23-all tie, but a UMES error and a block assist from junior Kathryn Glickman (San Fransico, Calif.) and Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) gave Bruno a 2-0 lead.

The third was also a 25-23 finish, but this time it fell in favor of Maryland-Eastern Shore. The score was tied early at 10-all but a 10-3 run by the Hawks forced the Bears to take a time out. After the breather, Bruno rattled off nine-straight points on senior co-captain Annika Gliottone's (Warwick, R.I.) service, to get back in the set. Tied at 23 for the second-straight frame, it was the Hawks that came away with the win.

UMES (5-4) continued its strong play in the fourth, taking early control at 10-5 on their way to a 25-16 win, which forced a fifth and deciding frame.

Again, the Hawks took and early lead at 5-2, but Brown continued to fight, tying it up at nine-all. In the end UMES was able to find a way to win, as three players finished in double-digit kills.

The Bears will be back in action this evening at 7 p.m., in the final game of the 2011 Brown Invitational as they take on local rival Bryant at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
