Queens, N.Y. – Brown took a 1-0 lead against Buffalo in the first game of the 2011 St. John's Kaiser Classic at Carnesecca Arena, but could not hold off the Bulls (4-3), falling 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 15-25, 20-25). The Bears (2-3) were once again led offensively by reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) who registered a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) also chipped in a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs.
The Bulls came out strong in the second set, scoring the first two points of the game on their way to an early 6-3 lead. Brown battled back however, using a 7-4 run to tie the frame at 10. The two teams continued to fight and the Bears were able to stay within two points of the Bulls, but at 18-16, Buffalo put together a 7-3 run to tie up the match at one.
Buffalo continued to roll at the start of third, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Bulls continued to expand their lead in the set and took a commanding 18-8 lead. Despite the deficit, Brown refused to quit, but ultimately Buffalo was able to close out the set 25-15 on the strength of four kills each from Liz Scott and Christine Fritsche.
In the fourth set, the Bears trailed 10-6 before back-to-back-to-back blocks by Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.), Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) and Kathryn Glickman (San Fransico, Calif.) seemed to spark Bruno as they eventually tied the frame at 13. The deadlock would only last to 14 when Buffalo took back control with a 6-2 run. The teams traded three points each before the Bulls added one more to bring it to match point. Lord was able to add one more kill before Buffalo closed out the match.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 11:30 a.m. when they take on host St. John's in the fourth game of the 2011 Kaiser Classic. Bruno will then take on Northeastern at 3 p.m. before returning to Providence.
