PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown volleyball team started off their 2011 campaign at the Sacred Heart Invitational versus the host Pioneers, and despite 11 kills from rookie Maddie Lord and a double-double from sophomore setter Alexandra Rieckhoff, the Bears fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-17).
Sacred Heart used double-digit kills from Kimme Roleder and Johanna Ovsenek and dual 21-assist games from Megan Pulone and Alisa Mesa to move past the Bears. The Pioneers also had two players with 18 digs each in Roleder and Jessica Colberg.
Brown came out hot is set number one, jumping out to a 7-3 lead, but at 16-13, Sacred Heart used four-straight points to take control of the set.
The two teams continued to battle in the second and despite facing set point at 24-17, the Bears rattled off three straight points to get back into it before the Pioneers picked up the set point.
The hotly contested start to each game continued in the third, as the score stood at 7-6 in favor of Sacred Heart. The Pioneers then rattled off six-straight points to take command. The young Bears battle back however, tallying three points of their own, but after trading two points apiece, Sacred Heard put down five in a row on their way to a 25-17 win.
Rieckhoff finished the game with 16 assists, 17 digs, a kill, block and ace while Lord made her debut in a big way with eight digs and an ace to go along with her team-leading 11 kills.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with two games against Rutgers and Hartford.
