PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown (5-6) completed a whirlwind schedule of four games in two days at the Brown Invitational on Saturday. The Bears downed Central Connecticut State 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-23), before being topped by Boston College in the final game of the tournament, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-20). Freshman setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior liberoAnnika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bears came out strong in their first game of the second day of play at the invite, limiting the Blue Devils to just 13 points in the first set. CCSU had trouble finding momentum throughout as both the Brown offense and defense kept the oppositions on its heels.
In the final game of the Invitational, Boston College came out strong against the Bears and boasted a .343 attack percentage as a team in the first set. Brown was able to adjust to the big hitters of the Eagles in the second game, knocking their percentage down to .122.
The Bears came close to snagging the second set as senior Danielle Vaughan (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and freshmen Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) and Thea Derrough(LaJolla, Calif.) all tallied three kills in the set.
Post led the team with eight kills, while Gliottone chipped in 12 digs as the backbone of the defense, but it came up just short against the Eagles.
For the tournament, Rieckhoff total 138 sets while also chipping in nine kills, six service aces, 35 digs and four blocks. Gliottone led the team with 57 digs while totaling five aces and three assists.
The Bears hit the road next Saturday when they travel to Stony Brook on Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. Brown opens its Ivy League slate the following weekend with a home-and-home series with Yale.
