Kingston, R.I. - The Bears dropped their opener at the URI Invitational on Friday evening, falling to Syracuse in straight sets. Rookie Bailey Wendzel (San Clemente, CA) turned in a solid performance for Brown, finishing with a team-high seven assists, and adding four digs and a kill. With the loss, Brown falls to 1-2 on the season, while Syracuse improves to 5-2 overall.
The first set was a relatively close one, as Bruno hung tough throughout, even pulling to within 10-8 and 20-15 later in the match. However, the Orange finished the set strong, coming away with an opening 25-17 win. Refusing to be discouraged, Brown once again came on strong in the second, threatening to pull the upset when the team moved to within 17-16. Syracuse again proved a tough out though, going on an 8-3 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead. Though Bruno fought hard in the third, the Orange settled into an impressive rhythm, moving out to a 10-4 lead and holding on for a 25-11 win to close out the match.
Rookie Carly Cotton (Newport Beach, CA) played well on the defensive end for the Bears, as she picked up a match-high 13 digs, while junior Megan Toman (Newport Beach, CA) led Brown with four kills.
The Bears will be back in action on Saturday morning, when they continue play at the URI Invitational, facing New Hampshire at 11:00 a.m. and Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m.
