Storrs, CT - The Brown women's track & field team competed at the University of Connecticut Spring Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bears' were led by Lauren Pischel's (La Jolla, CA) second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run, and Brooke Staton's (Owings Mills, MD) second-place finish in the long jump.
Pischel was Bruno's top finisher in the running events on Saturday, as she earned a 4:43.39 in the 1,500-meter run. Following right behind in third place was Megan Fitzpatrick with a 4:44.95, and Lena Groeger (Cambridge, MA) with 4:57.10 for seventh. Brown also saw solid efforts from Laura Armstrong (Louisville, KY), who came in eighth (2:18.37) in the 800-meter run, Alex Thomas (Baltimore, MD) with a 12th place finish (13.34) in the 100-meter dash, and Whitney Sparks (Bronxville, NY) with a 1:03.86 in the 400-meter dash for 14th place.
Stanton led Brown in the field events, earning a 17-08.25 in the long jump for second place. Cassandra Wong (Ridgewood, NJ) turned in a 10-11.75 effort in the pole vault for third, while Katie Wood (St. Joseph, MO) placed fourth (122-09) in the javelin throw and Anna Cook (Burlington, NJ) came in seventh (5-01.00) in the high jump.
A few members of the track & field team competed at the University of Arkansas at the John McDonnell Invitational. Competing against some very talented schools, the Bears' put forth a great effort and recorded some positive scores. Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY) finished in fourth place in the 400-meter dash (54.79) and then fifth in the 200-meter dash (24.66). Akilah King (Medford, MA) placed third in the triple jump (40-01.25) and also placed 12th in the 200-meter dash (25.00 seconds).
In the high jump, Grace Watson (Belmont, MA) placed eighth with a 5-05.00, as Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL) turned in a 45-03.50 effort in the shot put to place seventh. Grunloh also took 10th place in the discus with a 42.05. Natasha Smith (Gloucester, MA) did an outstanding job in the heptathlon, earning third place for her combined effort of 4744.
Up next, the Bears will compete at the Penn Relays beginning on Thursday, April 24, and then host the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 27.
