Boston, MA-- The women's cross country team traveled north to Boston today to compete in the New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park. The team took third overall, ahead of Harvard, and behind Boston University and Williams. Senior captain Anna Willard (Greenwood, ME) finished first for the Bears, 17th overall, with a time of 18:35. Classmate Anya Davidson (Brunswick, ME) finished one second behind Willard in 19th place.
Junior Michol Monaghan (Uniontown, PA) was not far behind in 18:41, which was good for 25th overall. Rounding out the top five for the Bears were senior Jilane Rodgers (Brea, CA) in 38th, and freshman Lindsay Kahn (Port Jefferson, NY). Sophomore Alex Brown (Kingston, NY) finished sixth for the team. Junior Naja Ferjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia) was also racing varsity but rolled her ankle in the last mile, preventing her from finishing where she would have under normal circumstances.
In the sub-varsity race, the Brown women took first place over Harvard by a margin of 17 points. Sophomore Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK), junior Madeleine Marecki (Morris, CT), and senior Kelly Powell (East Patchogue, NY) all finished in the top ten of the race.
Contrary to what the Schedule/Results section of this website says, the Bears will not, in fact, be traveling to the pre-NCAA meet in Terre Haute, IN. Their next competition will be the Heptagonal Championships on October 28 at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. Expect some excellent racing, as some of the top women in the country go after the individual title while the Bears look to improve upon last year's finish.
