Greensboro, NC - In the final day of the 2009 Division I Outdoor Track & Field NCAA East Regionals at North Carolina A&T, the Brown men's track & field team qualified one more athlete to compete at the NCAA Championship. Yesterday, the Bears qualified sophomore Craig Kinsley (Fairfield, CT) in the javelin throw, as the women's squad qualified sophomore standout Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) in the hammer throw. As the team wrapped up competition yesterday, senior Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN) earned the team's final bid to the NCAA Championship, qualifying in the discus.
After placing 23rd in the shot put on Friday afternoon, Powlen came back strong in the discus throw to earn fourth place with a 53.82m toss to earn a spot in the NCAAs. Senior Reginald Cole (Seattle, WA) turned in a solid performance for Bruno in the triple jump, garnering 25th place with a 14.60m leap.
On the women's side, junior Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL) competed in the discus yesterday as well, and finished in eighth place overall with a 46.99m throw. Competing in the 3,000m steeplechase was sophomore Michaeline Nelson (McLean, VA), who finished 28th overall with a time of 11:02.58, and junior Anja Hergrueter (Newton, MA) turned in a 16th place performance in the high jump with a 1.70m.
Brown's Kinsley, Powlen and Smith will now compete at the NCAA Championship held from June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
