Heps Day One Results

Philadelphia, PA-- After six of twenty-three events, the women's track and field team is in fourth place. The Bears brought in points today from the long jump, pole vault, javelin and 10,000m. Also today were the preliminaries for the sprints and middle distance events. After the first day of competition, the team is in good shape for tomorrow's finals.
Senior co-captain Brittany Grovey (Hobbs, NM) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 19'7". This performance puts her in third on the Bears' all-time outdoor top ten list. Grovey will be back on the runway tomorrow looking to defend her triple jump title.
In the pole vault, sophomore Tiffany Chang (Lafeyette, CA) vaulted 11'11.75" along with two other competitors. This height was good for second place.
The Bears took both the third and fourth spots in the javelin competition. Junior Laura Dudek (West Warren, MA) was third with a throw of 133'10" and freshman Ali Mumford (Gresham, OR) took fourth with 133'7".
In the hammer competition, freshman Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) placed fifth with a throw of 161'0".
In the 10,000m, the only final running event of the day, senior Anya Davidson (Brunswick, ME) placed sixth with a time of 36:02.01. Davidson's time puts her eighth on the Bears' all-time top ten outdoor list.
In the 100m, Lauren Hale (Warren, RI) advanced to the finals after running 12.24 in the first qualifying heat. Sophomore Akilah King (Medford, MA) and freshman Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY) advanced to the finals in both the 200m and 400m. King won her heat of the 200m in 24.49 while Burns was second in hers with a wind-aided time of 24.66. In the 400m trials, Burns won the second heat in 55.00 and King was second in the third heat in 56.54.
In the 800m, both senior co-captain Kelly Powell (East Patchogue, NY) and senior Anna Willard (Greenwood, ME) qualified for the finals. Willard won the second heat in 2:09.45 while Powell was second in the third heat with a time of 2:10.72.
Finally, after four events of the heptathlon, Brooke Wolfe is in fifth place with 2820 points.
Competition will resume tomorrow morning at 11:00 with the heptathlon long jump. The first running event will be the women's 5000m final at 11:45.
