Philadelphia, PA- The women's track and field team traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend to compete at the prestigious Penn Relays. The meet was highlighted for Brown by the 4x800 relay victory in the college women's race and the subsequent school record that was set (8:48.96). The relay team consisted of Katherine Kosub '04 (San Antonio, TX), Caci Cambruzzi '04 (Cincinnati, OH), Kate Cushing '04 (Cranston, RI), and Naja Ferjan '07 (Ljubljan, Slovenia).
Columbia jumped to a big lead early in the 4x800, but Cushing closed it up with a 2:12.6 split. Ferjan anchored with a split of 2:07.9. Columbia ended up finishing second, nearly 4 seconds back. Brown's time broke the previous school record by 1.17 seconds.
The 4x400 relay finished second in the college women's heptagonal division with a time of 3:47.42. This team included Kelly Powell '06 (East Patchogue, NY), Ferjan, Emily McElveen '04 (Chapel Hill, NC), and Julia Stevenson '04 (Bowie, MD). Their time was the best put forth by Brown in the last two years.
High jumper Katie Rowinski '04 (Wakefield, RI) competed in the college women eastern division and placed second with a jump of 5'8". Sophomore Anya Davidson (Brunswick, ME) competed in the 10,000m and ran a time only 20 seconds off her PR, despite the humid conditions.
Brown hosted an invitational at home after the Penn Relays on Sunday. It was a meet of new season bests for many athletes.
Annie Hatch '06 (Tacoma, WA) and Kathleen Loughlin '07 (Portland, OR) both PR'd in the 1500m with times of 4:41.53 and 4:45.34, respectively. Emma Sarro '05 (Chatham, NY), Katherine Kosub '04 (San Antonio, TX), and Julie Komosinski '05 (San Diego, CA) all ran within 3 seconds of their PRs. Brown took places 2-6 in the race.
Fara Kitton '05 (Bellmore, NY), had her best time of the season in the 100H (14.58). Stevenson and McElveen also ran season bests in the 200, with times of 24.67 and 25.17, respectively. Michol Monaghan '07 (Uniontown, PA) placed second in the 5000 and PR'd with a time of 18:05.
On the field, Erin Meschter '06 (Danville, PA) had the best performance of her college career in the high jump at 5'4.25". Dominique Bosa-Edwards '05 (Las Vegas, NV) had a season best 37'7.25" in the triple jump, while the 4x100 relay also put forth their fastest time so far at 47.57 seconds.
The next competition for the Bears will be the Heptagonal Championships held at their home track in Providence, RI on Saturday, May 8.
