Storrs, CT - The Brown track & field team had a strong showing at the UConn Alumni Invitational in Storrs, CT, this weekend. Women's team member, junior Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL) earned the Bears' discus title, while senior Matt Jasmin (Middletown, NY), earned the 110m hurdle, senior Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, IN) picked up the discus title, and sophomore Craig Kinsley (Fairfield, CT) won the javelin throw on the men's side. The women earned second place to host UConn (244) with a combined 136 points, followed by UMass in third with 117.
Grunloh garnered the discus title with a toss of 155-00, and also took second place in the shot put with a throw of 44-04.75. Junior Shannon Stone (Mont Vernon, NH) and sophomore Rachel Biblo (Thiensville, WI) earned second and third place finishes in the triple jump, respectively, as Stone posted a 37-04.00 and Biblo followed right behind with 36-10.25. Biblo also earned second in the long jump (17-10.75), while sophomore Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) picked up second place in the hammer throw with a 166-11.
Smith follow also followed right behind Grunloh in the shot put, recording a 42-06.25 for third place. Freshman Lissa Mazanec (Colby, KS) placed third in the discus with a 39.82, and junior Katie Wood (St. Joseph, MO) earned fourth in the javelin throw with a 118-08. Rounding out the field events was junior Cassandra Wong (Ridgewood, NJ), who took third place in the pole vault with a 10-06.00.
In the running events, freshman Susan Scavone led the 100m hurdles with a second place finish with a time of 15.17, and senior Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY) picked up second in the 200m dash with a 25.23. Freshman Roseanne Fleming (Westlake Village, CA) turned in a time of 2:15.65 in the 800m for second, while she also earned third in the 1,500m run with a 4:44.84. Following right behind was freshman Bridget Black (Hanover, NH) with a 4:53.55.
Sophomore Lucy Higgins (Jeffersonville, VT) gave a solid effort in the 400m dash with a 59.00 for third place, while freshman Rebecca Leeds also finished ninth in the event with a 1:02.47. Brown's 4x400m relay team also finished in second behind UConn with a time of 4:02.72.
On the men's side, Jasmin earned the 100m hurdle title with an outstanding 14.94, and he also placed 10th in the 200m dash with a 22.95. Senior Sean O'Brien (Westborough, MA) posted fourth in the 800m run with a 1:56.22, and freshman Sammy Smith (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) placed eighth in the 100m run (11.39).
In the 400m dash, junior John McManus (Chester, NJ) finished in sixth with a time of 51.49, and junior Kevin Cervantes (Los Angeles, CA) followed with an 11th place time of 52.33. In the 800m run, junior Alex Stern (Potomac, MD) finished in ninth (1:59.20) as freshman Anthony Schurz (South Bend, IN) came in 10th (1:59.29). Stern also gave a great effort in the 1,500m run, posting a time of 4:05.29 to cross the line in third, while Schurz came in right behind with a 4:05.44.
Brown's throwers did a fantastic job on Saturday, as Chapin garnered the triple jump title with a 47-08.50. In the high jump, sophomore Jordan Maddocks (Framingham, MA) earned second with a 6-04.25 and Greg Hunter placed third with a 6-02.25.
Powlen finished in third in the shot put with a toss of 51-09.25, and followed it with the discus title with a 175-03. Kinsley secured Brown's last title, with a 207-00 in the javelin throw.
