Tampa, FL-- The Brown women's track and field team traveled to the University of South Florida Invitational over spring break to get their first taste of outdoor competition for 2005. After getting some quality training in earlier in the week, they were ready for the competition that included schools from all over the nation.
On the field, the Brown throwers made a significant impact. Returning to her winning ways was sophomore Laura Dudek (West Warren, MA). Dudek won the javelin throw by almost a meter (43.01m/141'01"). In the shot put, senior co-captain Jill Lynch (Racine, WI) placed seventh overall with a put of 13.67m (44'10.25"). Freshman Sarah Groothuis (Aurora, NE) made her collegiate debut in the discus, and placed fourth in the event with a throw of 45.06m (147'10"). Senior Jennifer Donahue (Winter Park, FL) was fourth in the hammer competition with a throw of 50.59m (166').
Junior Brittany Grovey (Hobbs, NM) placed second in the triple jump (12.42m/40'9"). Senior Ashley Wall (Ellicott City, MD) placed twelfth in the high jump (1.63m). In the pole vault, freshman Tiffany Chang (Lafayette, CA) was tenth (3.36m/11'.25").
On the track, sophomore Naja Ferjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia) took second in the 1500m with a time of 4:33.21. Junior Anna Willard (Greenwood, ME) finished 9th in the 800m with a time of 2:17.46. In the unseeded 1500m, sophomore Michol Monaghan (Uniontown, PA) took second overall with a time of 4:45.8 while Willard placed fourth (4:47.89). Senior Fara Kitton (Bellmore, NY) placed seventh with a time of 14.45 in the 100mH. In the 400mH, junior Emily Lewis-LaMonica (Lawrenceville, NJ) took fifth (1:04.26). Brown's mile relay team was sixth.
The Bears return to action at the University of Connecticut Invitational on April 9 in Storrs, CT.
