Kingston, RI-- A limited women's track & field squad traveled south to Kingston, RI on Friday, January 20, to compete at URI's Sorlein Invitational. The Bears placed second behind the University of Connecticut with a strong showing from the younger members of the team.
On the field, sophomore Tiffany Chang (Lafayette, CA) took third in the pole vault (3.45m/11'3.75"). Junior Allison Brager (Youngstown, OH) was fifth (3.15m/10'4"). Senior co-captain Brittany Grovey (Hobbs, NM) placed third in the long jump (5.54m/18'2.25"). Freshman Katherine Harty (Ellington, CT) was sixth in the triple jump. Sophomore Chelsea McCarron (Georgetown, MA) placed fourth in the shot put (11.71m/38'5"), and freshman Samantha Kuo (San Mateo, CA) was fifth (11.54m/37'10.5"). Freshman Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) took fifth in the weight throw (13.46m/44'2").
In the sprints, freshman Dianna Anderson (Verona, NJ) placed third overall in the 55mH with a time of 8.72. Junior Lauren Hale (Warren, RI) took seventh in the 200m dash, and junior Laura Snizek (Vermontville, NY) and freshman Mackenzie Shults (Jamestown, NY) went 7-8 in the 400m dash.
In the middle distance events, senior Anna Willard (Greenwood, ME) placed second in the 1000m with a time of 2:56.06. Close behind her were junior Naja Ferjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia) in fourth (2:57.02) and senior co-captain Kelly Powell in fifth (3:02.66). Freshman Lindsay Kahn (Port Jefferson, NY) placed sixth in the mile with a time of 5:07.99, a new personal best for her by five seconds. Sophomore Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) placed fourth overall in the 800m.
The Brown 4x800m relay team (Willard, Gupta, Kahn, Ferjan) won the race in 9:20.66 with a five-second lead over the second place Quinnipiac team.
The team returns to competition next weekend at the Harvard-Cornell-Brown tri-meet, hosted by Harvard.
