Track & Field Competes on Day One of NCAA East Regional

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior Henry Tufnell (Cirencester, England) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 800 meters to lead the Brown men's and women's track & field teams in the first day of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Thursday at Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida.

Tufnell took third in his heat of the 800 meters, and finished 14th overall, to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals on Friday night. Tufnell passed four runners down the stretch to finish in a personal-best time of 1:48.72, marking the third fastest time in program history.

"Henry showed a lot of poise today," said Tim Springfield, Director of Track & Field.  "We didn't get off the line as strong as we'd planned, but he stayed patient and ran a great homestretch. I'm not surprised by the time - we'd been seeing it in practice for a while now. I think there's more there, which is exciting."

Freshman Ellie Gravitte (Ridgefield, Conn.) capped off her impressive rookie campaign with a 21st-place finish in the javelin, missing the cut by just five spots with a toss of 46.94 meters.

"Ellie did very well in her first NCAA appearance," said Springfield. "It's a challenging environment for a freshman, and she came very close to making finals. I know big things are in store for her in the future."

Senior Holleigh Bergstrom (Eugene, Ore.), junior Heather Vermillion (Visalia, Calif.) and senior Tyler Benster (Mercer Island, Wash.) also competed in the javelin, hammer and 800 meters, respectively.

The Bears return to action on Friday for the second day of competition of the NCAA East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium.
