INDIANAPOLIS – The Brown University men's and women's track & field teams had eleven student-athletes qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Championship round, recently announced by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field Selection Committee. The event will take place May 29-31 at Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

The preliminary rounds are broken down into two regions, East and West. The top 12 finishers of each region will earn a ticket to the NCAA National Championships next month in Eugene, Ore. In addition to the eleven qualifiers, senior Evan Weinstock (Las Vegas, Nev.) received a direct bid to NCAA National Championship in the decathlon since the event is not held at the regional meet.

The men's team received four bids, including Tyler Benster and junior Henry Tufnell (Cirencester, England) in the 800 meters. Junior Jordan Mann (St. Louis, Mo.) qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase after a seventh-place finish at the IC4A Championships last weekend. Junior Courtland Clavette (Ashville, N.C.) qualified in the discus. He was runner-up at the Ivy Championships and earned Second Team All-Ivy in the event.

The women's side had seven bids, including a pair of runners, as senior Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, N.H.) qualified in the 5,000 meters and Alex Stanton (Medfield, Mass.) earned a spot in the 400-meter hurdles.

The Bears had five field qualifiers, starting with senior Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, Mich.) and sophomore Kebbeh Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) in the discus. Buhr captured the Ivy Championship in the discus at Heps, while Darpolor placed third overall in the event. Senior Holleigh Bergstrom (Eugene, Ore.) and rookie Ellie Gravitte (Ridgefield, Conn.) both qualified in the javelin. Bergstrom was runner-up at the Ivy Championship and Gravitte broke the school record in the event at the ECAC Championships last week. Junior Heather Vermillion (Visalia, Calif.) qualified in the hammer throw to round out the competitors.
