AMES, Iowa – Senior Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, N.H.) finished seventh overall in the 5,000 meters as select members of the Brown indoor track & field team wrapped up competition at the Iowa State Classic over the weekend at the Lied Recreation Center.
On Friday, Caldwell took seventh in a strong field of 50 runners in the 5,000 meters as she crossed the finish line in a time of 16:13.72, just missing the school record of 16:12.3. Caldwell broke the school record in the 3,000 meters at the BU Terrier Invite earlier this season.
"Heidi competed well. It's been awhile since she competed at this level, and she did a very good job in a strong field," said Tim Springfield, Director of Track & Field. "She may have been a bit tentative the last 1000 meters--she'll have more there next time which is exciting."
On the men's side on Saturday, senior Matthew Bevil (Mary Esther, Fla.) and junior Henry Tufnell (Cirencester, England) finished 17th and 18th, respectively, in the 800 meters in times of 1:51.42 and 1:51.46.
"Overall, it was a disappointing day for us," said Springfield. "I'm glad that we had the opportunity to compete in a national caliber meet, and the experience was very valuable in developing our middle distance group, but I wish we had something more tangible to show for it. Some athletes were hindered by illness, but when we get on a national stage, we all expect better results."
The Bears return to action on Sunday, Feb. 23 when they compete at the New England Championships in Cambridge, Mass.
