Track & Field Recognizes Student-Athletes at Awards Ceremony

Providence, RI- Members of the Brown University track & field teams were honored at its 2011-12 awards banquet last week. Sophomore John Spooney, senior Dan Lowry and junior Lacey Craker were named team MVP's, while junior Olivia Mickle earned the team's Most Improved Award. Rookies Lauren Waterbury, InSoo Hwang and Peter Rhodes also earned Freshman of the Year honors.

Spooney had another outstanding year for the Brown sprinters as he earned three first team All-Ivy honors (100m, 200m, 4x400) and was a second team All-Ivy selection in the 60m dash. Spooney captured the 100 and 200m titles for the second consecutive year.

In the indoor Ivy League Championships hosted at Cornell in February, Spooney finished in second place in the 60m dash (6.79 seconds) to set a school record and earn second team All-Ivy accolades. He was also a member of the champion 4x400m relay team that earned first team honors with a time of 3:17.42.

At the outdoor Ivy League championships, Spooney received first team All-Ivy honors in both the 100m (10.62) and 200m (21.05) dash after winning both titles.

Lowry, an outstanding member of both the cross country and track teams, was named a 2011 cross country All-American after finishing 28th at the NCAA Championship. He was also a First Team All-Ivy selection and earned Academic All-Ivy honors in the fall as well. During the track season, he earned second team All-Ivy in the 5,000m run, and combined for 16 points during the outdoor championships. He set the Brown 5k record earlier this spring, and has also qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 5,000m.

Lacey Craker is the Heptagonal Champion in the hammer throw earning first team All-Ivy honors, and finished second in the discus to receive second team All-Ivy accolades. At the indoor championships, Craker finished second in the weight throw (second team All-Ivy) and qualified for the first round of the NCAA Championship.

Olivia Mickle, the Most Improved Award recipient, set a school record in the 10,000m (was the oldest school record on the board from 1979), and is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 10,000m run. She ranks 16th in the east region and ranks third all-time in the women's 5k at Brown. She earned second team All-Ivy honors in the 10,000m at the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships.

Waterbury, won the 400m to earn first team All-Ivy and boasts the fastest 400m time in the Ivy League in 2012 (indoors and outdoors). She scored in the 400m, 4x100 and 4x400m relay at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship to earn Freshman of the Year accolades.

InSoo Hwang, an integral member of the men's track & field squad, placed fifth in the 400h at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. He qualified for the IC4A's in the 400h and has the eighth fastest time in Brown history in that event.

Peter Rhodes is a Brown school record-holder in the heptathlon with 4,945 points. He placed fifth at the Ivy League indoor Heptagonal Championships in the heptathlon and ranks sixth all-time on Brown's decathlon list.
