Women’s Track & Field Competes at Harvard Challenge
Boston, MA- The Brown University women's track & field team along with the Harvard women's squad defeated the Patriot League (Army & Colgate) during the Harvard Challenge on Saturday afternoon. Four Bears brought home five titles, as senior Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) led the team with two.
Freshman Colby Lubman (Commack, NY) earned the 60m dash title yesterday running a swift sprint in 7.92 seconds. She followed it up with a second place in the 200m dash, running it is 25.93 seconds, just .35 behind first place finisher Christina Twicken of Harvard. Also competing in the event was junior Susan Scavone (Summit NJ), earning fourth place with a time of 26.84 seconds. Scavone also had an outstanding race in the 60m hurdles, earning a personal record of 8.76 seconds to win the title.
Sophomore Bree Shugarts (Lewistown, PA) came in four seconds behind Colgate's Elise DeRoo in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:58.40, and junior Amanda Filiberto (Northport, NY) rounded out the competitors with an eighth place time of 3:21.30. The Bears had three solid performances in the one-mile run to lock up second through fourth place finishes. Senior Kesley Ramsey (Franklin Lakes, NJ) finished second with a 5:00.52, and was followed by freshman Elaine Kuckertz (Clarendon Hills IL) in third with a 5:03.77 and senior Samantha Adelberg (Washington, DC) in fourth with a 5:08.02.
Rounding out the running events was Brown's 4x400m relay squad comprised of Adelberg, senior Lucy Higgins (Jeffersonville VT), Lubman and senior Brielle Beaudette (Agawam, MA). The relay team crossed the finish line in 3:59.99 to come in second place.
In the field, Smith won both the shot put and the weight throw for the Bears. She tossed a 47-05.00 in the shot and threw a 57-02.25 in the weight throw. Also competing in the shot was sophomore Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, MI), who posted a 41-04.50 good for fourth place, and freshman Jessica Eason (Boston, MA) followed right behind with a fifth place throw of 39-07.00. Sophomore Lacey Craker (Baraboo, WI) followed behind Smith in the weight throw to earn third place with a 50-01.75.
Senior Gabrielle Baiter (Greenlawn, NY) finished the meet with two second-place finishes. She leaped 17-06.25 in the long jump and 11.99m in the triple jump.
The Bears are back in action next weekend on Jan. 28 at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games hosted at Northeastern University.
