Providence, RI- Competition for the 2011 indoor track & field season kicks back into action today at the Sorlien Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island . A small group will compete this weekend while others will focus on training for the next couple weeks. The women compete today and the men compete on Saturday. Next week, brownbears.com will preview each event group as they prepare for competition.
The 2011 indoor track & field season follows an incredibly strong outdoor campaign in 2010. During last year's indoor season, the Brown track program was all but satisfied with its fourth place men's finish and fifth place women's finish at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. The 2010 outdoor season proved that the team was on a mission. The Bears raised the level of expectations and bounced back to a second place finish for the women at the Outdoor Ivy League Championships and a third place finish on the men's side.
"The team has a ton of momentum coming off the 2010 outdoor season and strong cross country season. The team has had a taste of success and is ready to work hard to move closer to a league championship," said Director of Track & Field, Michelle Eisenreich.
Led by senior Captains Craig Kinsley, Brynn Smith, Natasha Smith, and junior Matt Duffy, both the men's and women's teams have several individuals looking to finish at the top of the Ivy League and earn marks that will place them high on the NCAA descending order lists.
The Bears will have several key meets to focus on this year. After the Sorlien Invitational, the team travels to Harvard for a dual meet pitting the Ivy League (Harvard and Brown) against the Patriot League (Army and Colgate). The following week, the Bears will compete at The Reebok Boston Indoor Games held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Other highly competitive meets prior to the Ivy League Championships include the Yale Giegengack Invitational and the NYRR Night at the Races at the Armory in New York City.
