
Providence, RI- The Brown track & field teams opened its
2009-10 indoor season hosting its annual Vern Alden Invitational at
the Olney Margolies Athletic Center over the weekend. Both squads
had some great individual performances in their debut, as many
Brown Bears claimed titles in their respective events.
Standout thrower Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) had a great day in both the
weight throw and shot put as she already provisionally qualified
for the NCAA’s in the shot put with a 15.45m throw to earn
the Alden title, and followed it up with a six-foot personal best
(18.35m) in the weight throw to win the event. Earning a
third-place finish in the shot put was freshman Victoria Buhr with
a distance 13.19m, and Brown’s Lacey Craker garnered fourth
place honors in the weight throw with a 13.16m toss.
Cassandra Wong and Hannah Wallace tied for the pole vault title
with a solid 3.50m, as Samantha Dweck finished behind (2.90m) for a
sixth place finish. Gabriela Baiter, Shannon Stone and Rachel Biblo
secured first through third place finishes in the long jump, as
Baiter finished with a 11.76m jump, followed by Stone’s
11.41m and Biblo’s leap of 10.95m. Anja Hergrueter earned a
1.70m in the high jump to secure third place.
On the running side, Bree Shugarts ran a personal best in the mile
with a first-place time of 5:05.51, and also ran a great leg on the
4x400m relay team. Susan Scavone had a solid start and ran well in
all three of her events this weekend, competing in the 55m dash,
55m hurdles and the 4x400m relay. She captured sixth place in the
55m and placed fourth in the 55 hurdles with an 8.47.
Jasmine Chukwueke garnered the 500m dash title with a 1:17.35, followed by Lucy Higgin’s in second with a 1:19.08. Brown’s Carolyn Ranti ran the 1,000m in a 3:07.16 for third place, and Amanda Filiberto followed in fifth with a 3:11.34. Brown’s Rosie Fleming earned third place in the 3,000m run and Samantha Adelberg followed with a fourth place finish with a 10:40.18. The Bears 4x400m relay squad finished in second place with a 4:03.44.
The Bears are back in action in 2010, when the squad travels to Cambridge to compete in the Harvard Invitational no Jan. 16.
