The Brown women's tennis team competed in day one of the 2003 Brown Invitational and several Bears have moved on in their respective brackets. Following are results from the first day of competition.
Leading the Bears was freshman Daisy Ames (Atlanta, GA) and junior Alex Arlak (Leonia, NJ), who have both advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles "B" flight. In doubles action, the duo of junior Kerry Meath (St. Paul, MN) and sophomore Kim Singer (Newport Beach, CA) advanced to the semi-finals of the "A" flight.
In singles action, Singer and Meath each lost in the "A" flight first round, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively. They have both advanced in the consolation bracket with Singer winning 6-2, 6-1 and Meath winning 3-6, 6-3 (9) in the consolation first round.
Ames has moved to the semi-finals of the "B" flight with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the first round and a 6-1, 4-6 (10) victory in the quarterfinals. Arlak has also moved to the semi-finals of the "B" flight with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the first round and a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Amanda Saiontz (Miami, FL) advanced to the quarterfinals of the "C" singles flight with a 6-3, 6-3 win, but fell 3-6, 6-2 (7) in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, Meath and Singer advanced to the semi-finals of flight "A" with an 8-4 win. The Bears' other doubles pairs, senior Victoria Beck (Wellington, New Zealand) and Arlak in flight "B" and Ames and Saiontz in flight "C" have been eliminated out of the main bracket.
The Bears continue action in the Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
