Sept. 30, 2008
PALO ALTO, CA - Brown sophomore Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) competed at the 2008 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held at Stanford over the weekend. The first Brown player to qualify in over five years, Aboubakare was in the pre-qualifying singles draw, and went 1-1 on the weekend.
In her first match, Aboubakare faced LSU senior Mykala Hedberg, the #2 player for a team that finished last season ranked #27 in the nation. Aboubakare came out on the winning side of a hard-fought match that lasted over three hours. After winning the first set, 7-5, Hedberg came back to take the second set by an identical score. Aboubakare then won the third and deciding set, 6-2, to advance to the next round.
After only an hour to recoup, Aboubakare faced Jelena Stanivuk of Baylor, who had won her first match in two sets. Stanivuk was able to earn a two-set win, 6-1, 6-3, eliminating Aboubakare from the tournament.
Aboubakare and the rest of the Bears compete again October 11-13 when they take part in the US Open Tournament in Flushing, NY.
