Bears Conclude Action in Day 1 at William & Mary Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The Brown women's tennis team saw its first test of the 2005-2006 season on Friday in Day 1 of competition at the William & Mary Invitational. The Bears posted just two wins in doubles action, but fared better in singles action with four Bears earning first round victories in their respective flights.
Doubles competition started at 8:00 a.m. and Brown's players in the top three brackets were all defeated in their first matches. However, in the "D" bracket, Brown came away with two victories in what was a four-team round robin format. Freshman Alexa Baggio (Coopersburg, PA) and sophomore Meredith Woodhouse (Wayzata, MN) combined for an 8-5 victory over Richmond's Vosters and Zivanovic in their first match, before besting Downing and Nimitz of UVA, 8-2.
Baggio and Woodhouse will continue doubles action tomorrow, along with juniors Amanda Saiontz (Miami, FL) and Kara Zeder (Miami, OH) in the "A" bracket, junior Michelle Pautler (Kamuela, HI) and sophomore Anita Ivancevic (Delray Beach, FL) in the "B" bracket, and junior Daisy Ames (Atlanta, GA) and freshman Brett Finkelstein (North Caldwell, NJ) and sophomores Kelley Kirkpatrick (Villanova, PA) and Ashley Pariser (Alexandria, VA) in the "C" bracket.
In singles action, Brown had four players advance out of the first round in their respective brackets with Ames winning her first round match, 7-5, 6-4, in "C" singles, and Ivancevic winning her first round match, 6-0, 6-1 in "D" singles. Zeder picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win in her first round match in "E" singles, while Pautler earned a 6-2, 6-0 win in her first round match in "F" singles. Ivancevic picked up a three-set (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) victory in the second round of the "D" flight to stay alive, while Pautler earned a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win in her second round match in "F" singles to stay alive. All of the rest of the Bears have moved to the consolation bracket where they will continue on Saturday.
The Bears continue action tomorrow at the William & Mary Invitational. Doubles action begins at 8:00 a.m.
