Bears Edged by Cornell, 4-3; Sweep Columbia to earn Weekend Split

April 13, 2008

ITHACA/NEW YORK, NY - The Brown women's tennis team (10-8, 1-4) posted a weekend split at Cornell (L, 4-3) and Columbia (W, 7-0) while posting its first Ivy win of the season. On Friday, the Bears saw their recent streak of close matches continue, as the Big Red edged Brown, 4-3. Three of the singles matches went to three sets, and Cornell was able to win two of them, at #2 and #3, to earn the match. Brown rebounded the next day to post a 7-0 victory over Columbia, winning all six singles matches in straight sets, and giving up no more than four games to the Lions in any of the 12 sets. Freshman Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) led Brown again, winning all four of her matches over the weekend. In addition, Aboubakare and classmate Marisa Schonfeld (Washington, DC) combined to break Brown's 11-year old record for doubles wins by a single team in a season. With 18 doubles wins this season, the duo surpassed the record, held by Elisa Banner and Trishna Patel, by one victory.
