PROVIDENCE, RI - The women's tennis team evened its record at 2-2 with wins over Cincinnati (6-1) and UMass (6-1) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the Pizzitola Center.
Against Cincinnati, Brown failed to earn the doubles point, winning just one of the three matches, but won all six singles matches for the 6-1 win. Sophomore Stephanie Falconi (New York, NY) and senior Victoria Beck (Wellington, New Zealand) were the lone doubles victors, earning an 8-6 win at #2.
In singles action, Falconi led the way with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #1 singles. Four of the next five matches were won in straight sets. Junior Alex Arlak (Leonia, NJ) won at #2 (6-4, 6-3), freshman Amanda Saiontz (Miami, FL) at #4 (6-1, 6-2), freshman Michelle Pautler (Kamuela, HI) at #5 (6-2, 6-1), and junior Kerry Meath (St. Paul, MN) at #6 (6-4, 6-4).
Brown's other victory came at #3, where sophomore Kim Singer (Newport Beach, CA) won the last two sets, 6-3, 6-1, after losing the first, 2-6.
On Sunday afternoon, Brown won its second straight match, defeating UMass, 6-1. The Bears claimed the doubles point with wins at #1 and #2. Falconi and Beck won 8-2 at #1, while Arlak and Pautler took an 8-4 win at #2.
In singles action, Falconi won a three-set match at #1 (6-7 (6), 6-0, 1-0 (ret)). Freshman Daisy Ames (Atlanta, GA) won another three-set match for Brown, at #6, winning 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. Brown's other wins came at #2, Arlak (6-1, 6-3), #3, Saiontz (6-4, 6-1), and #5, Meath (6-1, 6-1).
The Bears continue action next weekend when they host Seton Hall and Rutgers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
