Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Play at Brown Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team closed out the fall season at the Brown Classic against Boston College, Bryant and Denver in a tournament that ran from Friday, Nov. 3 to Sunday, Nov. 5. Several Bears had strong performances with two singles players and a doubles team reaching the championship match.

In doubles play, senior Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) advanced to the championship match after a 6-1 and 6-3 win in their first two matches. The duo fell in the final match on Sunday, 6-2. Senior Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) and sophomore Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) won one match in the doubles bracket (6-4), but fell in their second (6-1). The team posted a 6-3 win on Sunday in the third place match.

In singles for the Aster Draw, Benotto reached the championship match after a competitive 6-4, 7-6 (4) win on day one and a 6-4, 7-5 victory on Saturday, but fell in the title match, 6-4, 6-0. Stearns fell in her first match of the draw but won on Saturday, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 and on Sunday, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

In the Buttercup Draw, junior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) lost her first match but rebounded with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win on Saturday and a 6-3, 6-0 showing on Sunday. Simon followed the same course, dropping her first match but claiming a victory in her second, 6-3, 6-3 and third, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) won the championship of the draw on Sunday with a 6-3, 0-6, 10-6 win. She reached the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win on Friday and a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 triumph on Saturday.

The Bears also competed against Bryant on Friday with junior Nandu Mandalap (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and freshman Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) teaming up for a 6-4 win in doubles. Freshman Semi Oloko (Canton, Mass.) recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory in first singles against the Bulldogs while Sheinin following in second with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

Versus the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oloko claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win in the first spot and Sheinin (6-3, 6-3) and Mandalap (6-3, 7-6 (8-6)) also followed with victories.

The Bears will eturn to action on Sunday, Jan, 21, hosting Rhode Island at the Pizzitola Sports Center Courts at 10:00 a.m.
