Women’s Tennis Concludes Action at Bulldog Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown women's tennis team closed out competition at the Bulldog Invitational on Sunday. Each player on the Bears' roster recorded at least one singles win on the weekend while junior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and freshman Semi Oloko (Canton, Mass.) posted two wins apiece. 

In addition to the Bears, Boston College, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Massachusetts and Yale had student-athletes compete in the tournament, running from Friday, Oct. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 8.

Friday vs. Harvard                                                                 
In the opening day of the invite, Harvard won the first three doubles matches while freshmen Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Oloko won in the fourth spot, 6-2.

For singles, senior Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) won first singles, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) (6-4, 6-4) posted the next victory in the third spot and was followed by Cosme (6-3, 3-6, 6-2). Kowalsky also recorded a win in singles, 6-1, 6-4, facing off against a player from Columbia.

Saturday vs. UMass
Against UMass on Saturday, Benotto and sophomore Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) started things off in first doubles with a 6-3 victory. Juniors Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Nandu Mandalap (Princeton Junction, N.J.) were next to win in third doubles, 7-5. Freshman Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Oloko closed out doubles with a 7-5 showing in the fourth spot.

In singles, Ta came back to take her fourth singles match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Oloko (6-2, 6-1, sixth), Sheinin (6-2, 6-0, seventh) and Mandalap (1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), eighth) rounded out the singles wins for the Bears.

Sunday vs. Cornell
To close out the Invitational on Sunday versus Cornell, Benotto and Jack teamed up for a 6-2 win in first doubles to start the morning and Ta and Simon took second doubles, 6-4.

Cosme posted a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win in second singles with senior Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) following in third singles with a 7-5, 6-4 showing. Simon added a 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 victory in the fourth spot while Oloko recorded a 3-6, 6-3 12-10 win in sixth singles.

The Bears will next compete at the ITA East Regionals, hosted by Penn, on Wednesday, Oct. 18 through Monday, Oct. 23.
