Women’s Tennis Cruises in Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team welcomed Rutgers, Stony Brook and UMass to College Hill for the Brown Invitational (Sept. 22-24).

Day One vs. UMass
The Bears split the doubles with the Minutewomen, with senior Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) recording a 6-1 win in first doubles, while junior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) won in third doubles, 6-3.

Brown registered victories in the first three singles spots from Benotto (7-5, 6-4 - first singles) senior Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) (4-6, 6-3 (10-5) - second singles) and Jack (2-6, 6-3 (10-8) - third singles). Junior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) (6-2, 3-6 (10-6)), Cosme (6-2, 2-6 (10-5) and Simon (6-2, 6-2) closed out the day with victories in fifth, sixth and seventh singles, respectively.

Junior Nandu Mandalap (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and freshman Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) teamed up and faced Rutgers separately on the day in doubles and won their match, 6-3. Sheinin also won a singles match against the Scarlet Knight, 6-2, 6-1.

Day Two vs. Rutgers
Brown and Rutgers also split doubles with Benotto and Jack again victorious in first doubles, 6-2. Stearns and freshman Semi Oloko (Canton, Mass.) teamed up and took a 6-1 win over Rutgers in the fourth spot.

For singles play against the Scarlet Knights, Jack won second singles, 6-3, 6-0. Cosme picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win in fifth singles while freshman Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) competed in her first collegiate match and took it 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win in sixth singles. Simon closed out the victories against Rutgers with a 6-2, 6-0 showing in the seventh spot.

Day Three vs. Stony Brook
Brown was dominant on the final day against Stony Brook, winning all three doubles matches with Benotto and Jack winning 6-1 in first, Simon and Cosme taking the second doubles match, 6-1 and Kowalsky and Oloko cruising to a 6-0 showing in the third spot.

In singles, Stearns started the Bears off in first singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win and was followed by Simon (6-3, 6-3 - second singles), Cosme (6-1, 6-1 - third singles), Ta (7-6 (5), 6-1 - fourth singles) and Oloko (6-4, 6-2 - fifth singles).

The Bears next compete at the Yale Invitational on Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 8.
