#50 William & Mary Outlasts #40 Bears in Five-Hour Marathon, 4-3
WILLIAMSBURG, VA – In a four-hour and 50-minute marathon, the 50th-ranked William and Mary women's tennis team (10-8) rallied from a 3-2 deficit for a 4-3 victory over 40th-ranked Brown (10-6) on Sunday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The match opened with a highly competitive doubles point, which the Tribe clinched with a 9-7 win at #1. After William & Mary went ahead with a 9-7 win at #3 doubles, Brown evened the point with the duo of junior Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) and freshman Ariel Caldwell (Atlanta, GA) earning an 8-5 win at #2. Brown's top team of senior Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) and freshman Jessica Harrow (Los Angeles, CA) held a 7-6 lead against the 50th-ranked duo in the country, but could not close out the match and fell, 9-7, as William & Mary took the 1-0 lead.
Brown rebounded in singles competition, as Aboubakare earned a 6-4, 6-3 decision at #2 singles and junior Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at #6 singles to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. However, William & Mary answered back to tie the score at 2-2 with a win at the #5 position.
The balance of the match came down to a trio of three-set matches at the #1, #3 and #4 positions. After Brown took a 3-2 lead with a win by sophomore Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) at the top singles slot (6-0, 4-6, 6-1), the Tribe tied the match again, 3-3, with a victory at #4.
With the match even at three, it came down to a third setter between Herzberg and Marlen Mesgarzadeh at #3. After splitting the first two sets with Mesgarzadeh winning the first, 6-3, and Herzberg the second, 7-5, the counterparts traded blows in the high-intensity third set. Mesgarzadeh fought off an early break to get back on serve, before breaking Herzberg in the 12th game for a 7-5 clinching victory.
Brown continues action on Tuesday, March 29th, when it faces Old Dominion in a 1:00 p.m. match. It is the final non-league Match of the year for the Bears, who open Ivy League play when they travel to Princeton for a 2:00 p.m. match on Friday, April 1st.
