#53 Women’s Tennis Goes 3-0 on the Weekend

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown women's tennis team (7-5) hosted three matches over the weekend, winning all three, to climb to above .500 on the season. On Saturday, the Bears earned a 6-1 win over Akron, handing the Zips their first loss of the 2011 season. In a double-headed on Sunday, Brown claimed a 6-1 win over Stony Brook and then defeated cross-town rival Providence College, 5-0.

On Saturday against the Zips, the Bears swept the doubles point and then won at the top five singles positions to claim the victory. Highlighting the doubles action was an 8-6 win by senior Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) and freshman Jessica Harrow (Los Angeles, CA) over the 18th-ranked duo in the country. Also winning for Brown was the team of freshman Ariel Caldwell (Atlanta, GA) and junior Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) at #2 (8-2) and junior Carissa Aboubakare (Orange, CA) and sophomore Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) at #3 (8-5).

Brown earned three of the five singles wins in straight sets, as Krasowski won at #1 (7-5, 6-4), Bianca Aboubakare at #2 (6-3, 6-3) and Caldwell at #5 (6-1, 6-3). Herzberg claimed a three-set win at #3 (6-4, 3-6, 6-1), while Harrow won in three sets at #4 (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) to account for the 6-1 final.

On Sunday morning against Stony Brook, the Bears won their second straight doubles point with wins at #1, 8-1 by Bianca Abouabakare and Harrow, and #3, 8-3, by Carissa Aboubakare and Krasowski.

Singles wins came from Krasowski at #1 (6-0, 6-2), Bianca Aboubakare at #2 (7-5, 6-1), Herzberg at #3 (6-2, 6-1), Harrow at #4 (3-6, 6-2, 6-4), and junior Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) at #6 (3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4)).

The match against Providence was played in a one-and-four format, which features just one doubles match and four singles matches. Flanzer and Krasowski combined for the doubles victory, while Herzberg, both Bianca and Carissa Aboubakare, and senior Ashley Butler (Charlotte, NC) won in singles action.

Brown continues action on Saturday, March 5, when it hosts Boston University in a 12:00 noon match.
