WACO, TX - The Brown women's tennis team (1-0) opened its 2010 dual season at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, hosted by #5 Baylor. Brown lost the doubles point, but got wins at #1, #2, #5, and #6 singles to pick up the victory. Junior Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) and sophomore Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) helped to lead the team, as the duo won both of their matches.
In doubles action, the 29th-ranked team of Aboubakare and Herzberg claimed the lone win for the Bears with an 8-5 victory at the #1 position.
Herzberg, ranked 89th in singles action, tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Marta Mizyuk at the #1 singles position, but a loss at #4 regained a lead for Nevada, 2-1.
Sophomore Catherine Stewart (Sewickley, PA) tied the match for a second time with a win at #6 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Aodhnalt Lombard. Sophomore Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) gave Brown its first lead of the day with her win at #5 singles, 6-3, 7-5 over Sophie Stevens. Aboubakare then closed out the match with a three-set win over Florence De Vrye at the #2 position, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
The Bears continue action tomorrow afternoon, January 31st, when they face host Baylor, currently ranked #5 in the country, in the championship match at 1:00 p.m. Baylor defeated #66 Harvard, 4-0, in its first round match.
