Brown Doubles Team of Herzberg and Aboubakare Claims ITA Regional Title

NEW HAVEN, CT - Junior Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) and sophomore Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) combined to claim the ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Title, beating Vicky Brook and Stephanie Kent of Yale, 8-2, in the Championship Match. By virtue of their victory, Aboubakare and Herzberg will now play in the ITA National Indoors to be hosted by Yale, November 5-8. Herzberg has also advanced far into the singles bracket, as she is currently facing Hilary Bartlett, of Princeton, in Tuesday's semi-final match, which began at approximately 10:30 a.m.

En route to their Doubles title, Aboubakare and Herzberg, who were the second seed in the tournament, defeated all five opponents they faced, including three seeded teams, while outscoring their opposition, 40-18. After opening with a bye in the round of 64, the duo claimed an 8-2 win over Krysten Chen and Andrea Collomb of St. Peter's. Next up was an 8-4 victory over Sarah Lederhandler and Jessie Rhee of Yale.

Aboubakare and Herzberg had their two closest matches in the quarterfinals and semifinals with a pair of 8-5 wins. They displaced fourth-seeded Monica Chow and Rachel Saiontz of Princeton in the quarterfinals before claiming a semi-final victory over third-seeded Molly Scott and Mary Beth Winingham of Dartmouth.

Other players who competed in the tournament included sophomore Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) and freshman Misia Krasowski (Deerfield, IL) in doubles, seniors Emily Ellis (Fort Worth, TX) and Kathrin Sorokko () in doubles, and Flanzer, Krasowski, Aboubakare, junior Marisa Schonfeld (Washington, DC), and sophomore Jenny Lee (Sudbury, MA) in singles. Sophomore Catherine Stewart (Sewickley, PA) also played over the weekend, competing in the Brown Invitational.
