Bears Open 2004-2005 Season with 209-92 Loss to Harvard

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University women's swimming and diving team (0-1, 0-1) opened the 2004-2005 season on Friday evening with a 209-92 loss to Harvard at the Smith Swim Center.
Highlighting the afternoon were first place finishes in the 200 Free; sophomore Becky Kowalski (Fort Myers, FL); the 100 Back; senior Mariana Chuck (Kingston, Jamaica); and 3-Meter Diving; junior Jessica Larson (Wayland, MA).
In the first event, the 200 medley relay, the team of senior Jessica Brown (Orange, MA), juniors Elizabeth Wong (Santa Monica, CA) and Eileen Robinson (Harbour Grace, NF), and freshman Aly Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI) took second with a time of 1:48.00.
Freshmen Meredith Moore (Carmel, IN) and Dillon Delaney (West Barnstable, MA) took a three-four finish for Brown in the 1000 free with times of 10:28.56 and 10:31.38, respectively. Kowalski followed with her winning time of 1:53.61 in the 200 free, while Chuck clocked in at 58.55 in the next event, the 100 back, good for first. Brown was right behind Chuck with a 58.57 in the 100 back, good for second.
The Bears earned a three-four finish in the 100 breast, as Wyatt and sophomore Julia Lippe-Klein clocked in at 1:07.23 and 1:07.85, respectively. Sophomore Ashley Wallace (Chatham, NJ) was Brown's top finisher in the next event, the 200 fly, taking third with a time of 2:05.29.
Next up was the 50 free, where Robinson took second with a time of 24.42. In the first diving event, the 1-Meter, sophomore Amy Latinen (Fenton, MI) took fourth as the Bears' top finisher with a score of 247.71. Robinson then swam the 100 free, and took third with a time of 52.98.
Brown had a three-four finish in the 200 back, with sophomore Emily Brush (Duxbury, MA) touching the wall in 2:07.94 and classmate Lindsay McKenna (Voorheesville, KY) coming in at 2:09.29. The Bears took second and third in the 100 fly, with Wong leading the way with a time of 58.46. Freshman Lauren Zatorski clocked in a 58.80.
Larson won the next event, the 3-Meter dive, with a score of 254.47. Sophomore Meredith Cocco (Lafayette Hill, PA) took third in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:11.41. The Bears finished the meet with a second place finish in the 400 free relay with the team of Wyatt, Robinson, Wong, and Kowalski finishing in a time of 3:35.15.
Brown continues action tomorrow afternoon when it welcomes Ivy rival Dartmouth to the Smith Swim Center for a 2:30 p.m. meet.
