PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's swimming & diving team (2-2, 2-2) edged past Penn, 123-120 on Saturday, January 14, at the Smith Swim Center. The meet was the final home meet for the seven seniors, tri-captains Jessica Larson (Wayland, MA), Katey Mirch (Reno, NV), and Eileen Robinson (Harbour Grace, NF), and Bridgette Cahill (Turnersville, NJ), Tatyana Tsangarakis-Almeida (Providence, RI), Ali Will (Mequon, WI), and Elizabeth Wong (Santa Monica, CA).
Brown started the afternoon by winning the 400 Medley Relay, as the team of junior Emily Brush (Duxbury, MA), sophomore Aly Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI), Wong, and Will touched the wall in a time of 3:58.16.
Brown took third in the next event, the 1000 Free, with freshman Ainsley McFadgen (Glace Bay, NS) touching the wall in 10:33.81. Sophomore Dillon Delaney (West Branstable, MA) was fourth with a time of 10:37.82. Junior Becky Kowalsky (Ft. Myers, FL) got the Bears back on the winning track with a first place finish in the 200 Free, clocking in at 1:54.39.
Robinson and Wong led they way in the 50 Free, earning a 1-2 sweep with times of 24.14 and 24.76, respectively, while junior Meredith Cocco (Lafayette Hill, PA) took second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.83. Cocco won the 200 Fly with a time of 2:06.62, while Cahill took third in the event with a time of 2:09.18.
Robinson won her second event of the day, touching the wall in 53.35 in the 100 Free, while Brush led Brown in the 200 Back, taking third with a time of 2:09.05. Kowalsky was Brown's top finisher in the 500 Free, taking second with a time of 5:05.37, while Wyatt was Brown's top finisher in the 200 Breast, taking fourth with a time of 2:27.60.
The Brown team of Robinson, Kowalsky, Wong, and Will won the final swimming event of the day, the 400 Free Relay, touching the wall in 3:32.72, to secure the victory for the Bears.
In diving action, Larson remained undefeated in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter in dual competition, posting a 243.82 on the 1-Meter and a 272.77 on the 3-Meter. Junior Amy Latinen (Fenton, MO) was fourth on the 1-Meter with a score of 223.73. Latinen finished third on the 3-Meter with a score od 236.02, while freshman Jessica Williams (McLean, VA) took fourth with a score of 235.58.
The Bears continue action Saturday, January 28, when they travel to New York, NY to swim against both Columbia and Cornell in a meet held at Columbia at 12:00 noon.
