Brown senior Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) was named Brown University's RIAIAW (Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) Distinguished Female Athlete of the Year. A four-year letterwinner on the softball team, Omokaro is a two time First Team All-Ivy Selection.
One female athlete from each college/university within Rhode Island is selected for the award. The athletes being honored will be introduced during a presentation by their respective coaches on May 4, at 5:00 PM at Johnson & Wales University.
The RIAIAW has been in existence since 1976 for the purpose of promoting women's athletics throughout the state. The Distinguished Athlete Award honors women whose leadership, dedication, and athletics accomplishments define the true meaning of student-athlete.
This season Omokaro has earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors for her performance on the mound for the Bears, getting her first win of the season. Against San Jose State Omokaro pitched seven innings, holding the Spartan bats to only two hits, fanning nine in the 3-2 victory. In addition to her dominance on the field, Omokaro excels in the classroom. Last season while leading her team to an Ivy League Softball Championship, Omokaro organized and facilitated a Group Independent Study Project on the topic of self-efficacy and self-improvement. Omokaro is seen as leader on and off the field by teammates getting an unanimous vote for captain of the team for her senior season this spring.
