Lions Take Doubleheader 4-0 and 6-5

(Mar. 31, 2001) -- The Brown softball team completed its Spring Break tour of the West Coast on Saturday, March 31, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the Loyola Marymount Lions, 4-0 and 6-5. Brown is now 2-16 overall, and will try to snap its twelve-game losing streak this Wednesday at Boston University.

The first contest was scoreless on both sides until the bottom of the sixth inning, when three singles and a three-run homer by Lisa Abbott proved to be too much for the Bears, as they could not rally in the seventh to get on the board. Cara Howe (Missouri City, TX) led Brown at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a single, and Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) threw all six innings to pick up her fifth loss on the mound this season.

Despite some great hitting and determination by the Bears, they were unable to come away with a win in the second contest. After getting one run in the top of the first with a single by Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) and an RBI double by Tami Parrott (Wantage, NJ), the Lions answered quickly with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Brown scored once more in the fourth, then took the lead in the fifth when Durlesser smacked a three-run homer for the Bears. Loyola Marymount narrowed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, and then scored two in the bottom of the seventh to pull away with the win. Freshman Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA), who gave up only two earned runs, was tagged with the loss, her fourth of the season.

The Bears will travel to Boston University this Wednesday, April 4, to take on the Terriers in a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
